Mineralization Comments

Mar 13, 2008 (Mark Puumala) - The surface expression of this occurrence is described by Sage and Breaks (1982) as a gold mineralized quartz vein in an east-trending shear zone. The vein is located at the contact between mafic metavolcanics and gabbro. Trenching carried out in 1941 by the Hooker-Wilson Syndicate exposed the vein over a strike length of 25 m, while the shear zone is traceable for 90 m (Sage and Breaks 1982). Robertson (1941) noted that the shear zone is approximately 1 to 4.5 m wide, becoming narrower to the east, and that it is oriented at 072/70. Robertson (1941) described the mineralized quartz vein as a tear-shaped body with a maximum width of 8.5 m. The vein pinches out in along strike in both directions, with only quartz stringers observed in the shear zone to the east and west of the main exposure. Robertson notes that the quartz vein contains little sulphide mineralization, but that the wall rocks and wall rock inclusions within quartz are mineralized with pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite and galena. Robertson (1941) reported that Pickle Crow Gold Mines obtained grab sample assays of up to 0.62 oz/ton Au and 3.46 oz/ton Au from samples of sulphide mineralized quartz and massive sulphides respectively. However, 35 samples collected by Robertson (1941) from this zone were reported to contain low assay values (Mostly nil to trace), with a maximum value of 0.05 oz/ton Au. During a 1981-82 exploration program carried out by the Canadian Nickel Company, Perry (1982) reported a grab sample assay of 3.5 ppm Au in close proximity to the Hooker-Wilson trenches from a 2 cm wide arsenopyrite vein hosted within a wider quartz vein. The Canadian Nickel exploration program also included diamond drilling that targeted a geophysically-inferred folded iron formation horizon that is located immediately adjacent to the Hooker-Wilson vein. The axial plane of the fold strikes east, while the inferred fold closure (syncline) is shown on Canadian Nickel detailed geology map E-6 to be located immediately to the west (Perry 1982). Four diamond drill holes (57737 to 40) targeted this structure, with anomalous gold mineralization reported in three (57737, 39 and 40). Perry (1982) reported that the gold mineralization was associated with sulphide facies (possibly sulphidized oxide facies) iron formation. Notable assay values included 1.68 g/t Au over 0.3 m in drill hole 57737, 0.55 g/t Au over 0.2 m in drill hole 57739 and 8.92 g/t over 0.2 m in drill hole 57740. Perry (1982) also reported that an earlier diamond drilling program carried out on this occurrence by Inco in 1961 (drill holes 15786 and 87 - logs in AFRI# 53A05NW0045) produced assays of up to 4.46 g/t over 0.76 m.
