Mineralization Comments

Mar 07, 2008 (Mark Puumala) - Sage and Breaks (1982) describe the Shear Zone occurrence as a 055-striking rusty, pyritic shear zone that parallels a 1.5 m wide quartz-feldspar porphyry dike. Talbot (1996a) reported that the shear and dike are hosted within tholeiitic basalts, and that the mineralized zone is approximately 3 m wide. Mineralization in the shear zone is reported by Sage and Breaks (1982) to be largely confined to narrow shear-parallel quartz veinlets, and consists of less than 5% disseminated pyrite. Several anomalous gold assays have been reported from this zone since it was initially explored by Rio Tinto Canadian Exploration between 1962 and 1965. McWilliams, Gillan and Smith (1981) reported that Rio Tinto obtained assays of 0.02 oz/ton Au and 0.18 oz/ton Ag from a chip or channel sample collected across a 30 cm wide portion of the zone. During a four hole diamond drilling program (AFRI# 53B02NW0007), Rio Tinto reported occurrence-grade gold assays in drill hole numbers 1, 2 and 3, with the most notable result being 0.055 oz/ton Au over 0.73 m in drill hole No. 1. It should be noted that assay values of up to 0.1 oz/ton were initially reported for samples collected from drill hole No. 3. However, repeat assays for the samples reported to contain the highest gold values only returned trace amounts of gold. Later diamond drilling of this zone by Dome Exploration in 1976 (see AFRI# 53B02NW0002 and McWilliams, Gillan and Smith 1981) also returned occurrence-grade assays from three drill holes (S-2, S-3B and S-6), with the most notable result being 0.06 oz/ton over 2 m from schistose gabbro mineralized with 15% pyrite + pyrrhotite and 5% arsenopyrite (McWilliams, Gillan and Smith 1981). Sage and Breaks (1982) reported a surface grab sample assay of 0.08 oz/ton Au, while Talbot (1996a) reports surface grab sample assays of up to 1.0 g/t Au at the contact of the quartz-feldspar porphyry.
