Lithology Comments

Nov 20, 2014 (Mark Puumala) - - Ayres (1971) describes this occurrence as a 30 cm wide quartz-calcite vein located near the north end of an east-west-trending metagabbro dike. The vein is reported to be oriented 175/20, and was exposed in a trench that covered a strike length of approximately 10 m. Ayres reports the presence of silicified intermediate metavolcanics immediately to the north of the gabbro contact. The silicified metavolcanics are mineralized with up to 5% disseminated pyrite and chalcopyrite. This mineralized zone is reported to be approximately 3 m wide, and has been traced by pits over an approximate strike length of 45 m. The mineralized metavolcanic horizon parallels the contact between a porphyritic flow and a tuff horizon that strikes 010. Mapping by Ayres (1972) indicates that foliation in this area generally strikes northwest with near-vertical dip. The difference in bedding and foliation orientations suggests that this occurrence is in the vicinity of a fold closure.
